July 6, 1945 – May 25, 2025
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Mae Erickson (nee McGee) on May 25, 2025, in Kamloops, British Columbia.
Born on July 6, 1945, in Glasgow, Scotland, Mae spent the better part of her life being a caregiver to those around her. Mae is survived by her three children, Tracey (Kevin), Adam (Katie) and Kristi, as well as grandchildren, Eric and Rebekah, and was predeceased by her loving husband, Bruce.
Born and raised in Glasgow, Mae spent her childhood with parents William and Mary, and sister Sandra, in a small apartment. She enjoyed school, particularly math and Latin. Her father would take her to watch football games, and she enjoyed baking with her mother. A talent she carried on throughout her life. After school, she became a hairdresser for a few years before embarking on the adventure of a lifetime by coming to Canada. She landed in Toronto, but the itch to explore took over, and she traveled across to Vancouver by train. A definite highlight in her life as it often came up in conversation, and she always recommended it to people with a smile on her face. Originally only meant to be in Canada for a year or two, a dashing young man named Bruce entered the picture and changed her life forever. Before long they were married and over the course of the next 10 years, they welcomed their three children. Bruce’s line of work kept them moving around for the better part of those first 10 years. They enjoyed time in Vancouver, Port Hardy, Fort McMurray, Logan Lake and eventually settled in Kamloops where Mae was a full-time homemaker and mother.
Mae was the epitome of motherhood; the gold standard, the A+, the barometer for excellence. She volunteered in classrooms, watched countless hours of softball games and attended every performance and awards ceremony there was. There were constantly home-baked goods in the house, and she exercised her sewing skills frequently, always making sure the kids had the best Halloween costumes. After her beloved husband passed away, Mae re-entered the work force where she became a well-loved department head of the Hudson’s Bay, where she worked for nearly 20 years before she retired. In her retirement she was able to spend a great deal of time with her grandchildren where she carried on the same traditions she had with her kids. More baked goods, Halloween costumes and handsewn stockings for Christmas. Christmas was undoubtedly her favourite time of year, and she always managed to make it special. When Elvis’ Blue Christmas was heard throughout the house, you knew the festive season had begun.
A shy person by nature, known mostly as the lady with the fun accent and warm smile, those in her circle also knew her to be kind, generous and joyful. We will forever be blessed to be your darlin’s.
Massive thank you to the Kamloops Hospice Association nurses and care aids who provided the absolute best care to her in her final days.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Hospice in Mae’s name.
