Larry "Bob" Robert McGill

Posted Jan 6, 2026 | 11:33 AM

March 14, 1958 – December 25, 2025

Larry Robert McGill fought a brief but courageous battle with cancer before passing peacefully, surrounded by family, in the late hours of December 25, 2025.

Bob is predeceased by his loving parents, Grattan and Fay McGill, as well as his mother-in-law Elizabeth Saplywy. He will live forever in the hearts of his beloved wife Carol, daughters Meghan and Emma, sisters Debra and Carrie, father-in-law Karol, brother-in-law John (Jessica), his four beautiful nieces, many cousins, his dear friends, and of course his grand-pups Nico and Maeve.

Bob was born on March 14, 1958, in Williams Lake, B.C. The second of three siblings, he took his job as a brother to two sisters very seriously – looking out for them while also driving them a little crazy. Bob was four when the family moved to Dawson Creek where he had a happy, small-town childhood. He spent many early mornings at the rink playing hockey, and his sisters remember that he was always popular with lots of friends around him.

In the summer of 1982, Bob was the best man at a wedding in Kamloops when he met a beautiful bridesmaid, Carol, at the wedding rehearsal. Three years later the two were married in Kelowna, starting their family in the Okanagan, before finally settling in Kamloops. Bob was so excited to be a dad, and it was one of the greatest joys of his life. His girls fondly remember summer vacations spent visiting their dad in small towns across B.C. and winters coming home from school to dad working in the kitchen with the music blasting.

In his retirement, Bob loved camping with his wife Carol while making time to visit family and friends wherever they went. An early riser, Bob started every day by warming up Carol’s coffee cup. He loved to spend quiet moments meditating, connecting with friends in different time zones, and baking banana bread for his daughters and father-in-law. His morning Tim’s was a daily ritual, and Bob enjoyed his coffee at many favourite places along the Thompson River. He often arrived home with a story of seeing an eagle while hunting, and with a new feather for his collection.

Bob never liked to be in the spotlight, and you would always find him working behind the scenes, knowing that small acts of kindness, love and generosity made the world a better place. With that in mind and in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Out of the Cold Kamloops where Bob volunteered for many years.

A funeral mass and reception will be celebrated Monday, January 12, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John Vianney Church: 2826 Bank Rd., Kamloops, B.C.

You may offer a message of condolence at Schoening Funeral Service for the McGill family.
