May 7, 1928 – January 5, 2024
The children of Jean Ellen McComb (Patterson) are sad to announce that six months after our father, Bud, passed away, our mother decided that it was time to join him. After 72 years of marriage and true love, they were reunited on January 5, 2024 – dad’s birthday. We take comfort in thinking he was waiting for her on this special day.
Mom was born on May 7, 1928, the eldest of 3 girls, in Regina, Saskatchewan and lived in the small prairie town of Tyner where her father farmed and was the first Elevator Pool Agent. Her schooling was done in a one room schoolhouse from grades 1-8. She then boarded for grades 11 and 12 in Eston Sask. After graduation mom enrolled in nursing school and graduated from Regina General Hospital in 1949 and moved to Rosetown where her parents now lived, and she was able to practice her new profession at the local hospital.
Rosetown is where she met dad. We aren’t sure who hit who with a birdie on the badminton court, the story changed over the years, but in any event, they met and were married in June 1951 and went on to raise 4 children. Mother was the strong, silent type and often the voice of reason which made her union with dad, who was just the opposite, so compatible. She had a unique sense of humour and understanding.
Being a mother was one of the most important parts of her life, a role that gave her much pride and joy. She was always there when we needed help with homework, a shoulder to cry on or a skirt to hide behind. She and dad loved to dance and did so at any opportunity.
In 1970 the family relocated to Kamloops where mom and dad resided for 20 years before retiring to the Okanagan. It was here that they took up hiking, cross-country skiing and golf. Mom was always a knitter, and once the grandchildren and great grandchildren started to arrive, she found new generations for whom to make Christmas stockings, baby sweaters or blankets. Mom and dad loved to entertain and accommodate family visits. Mother was aways busy in the kitchen and made sure all were well fed. Sunday dinners usually consisted of a roast and the best Yorkshire pudding. No meal was ever complete without a home baked pie or pudding. She loved fashion and would never dream of going out of the house without her makeup on and dressing for the occasion in the latest fashions.
Mom and dad moved back to Kamloops when mom started having health issues and the past 6 years were spent in long term care. She enjoyed daily visits from dad and loved having family visits, which were often.
Mother was predeceased by her parents, her two sisters and their husbands as well as a nephew.
Left to mourn and cherish her memory are her daughter Kevin (Mark) and sons Doug (XX), Bill (Tracey), Dave (Donna), 9 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank everyone at Gemstone Care Center, especially the door greeters, the front office administration, Dr. Wynne and all the staff on Quartz West for taking such wonderful care of mom these past few years.
A family service will take place in the spring.
Mom, you will always be in our hearts, and we will never forget you. Rest in peace.
