It is with great sadness that the family of Geraldine Margaret Sawin announce her passing on May 9, 2020 in Pinantan Lake British Columbia, at the age of 73. Geraldine had battled pancreatic cancer for nearly two years. Geraldine was surrounded by her family and died at home as was her wish. Geraldine was born August 30, 1946 in Bengough Saskatchewan to Leonard Sawin and Mary (Paterson).
Geraldine lived with her mother and father until the death of her father due to a farm accident when Geraldine was 2. Her four older half siblings lived nearby with a grandparent. Geraldine moved with her mother to Vancouver, British Columbia. Geraldine survived meningitis and a house fire in her childhood years. Her mother remarried William Redwick and Geraldine’s brother, Wayne Redwick, was born a few years later. Geraldine graduated from Killarney High School in Vancouver and the family later moved to Burnaby, BC. Geraldine’s family life while growing up was one of the many challenges she endured. Geraldine had her first child, Marcia in 1965. She married Renold Morley in 1966 and had another daughter, Lana the same year. A third daughter, Jennifer was born in 1972. Geraldine completed her under grad degree at Simon Fraser University and later continued her education to become a Registered Social Worker. While attending university and raising her three daughters Geraldine began working at the Coquitlam Family Centre, initially with the Crisis and Suicide Prevention Centre. She returned for additional education and eventually became an Art Therapist. It was then that she began to focus mostly working with abused women, finishing her career with the Port Coquitlam Women’s Centre. Geraldine remained in the Lower Mainland of BC until retiring in 2012 and moving to Pinantan Lake, BC in May of that year.
Geraldine is predeceased by her parents Leonard Sawin and Mary Redwick(Paterson) and step father William Redwick. as well as by her younger brother Wayne (Rita) and her older sister Louise (Hank). She is survived by her siblings Mary (Merlyn), Laverne (Cynthia) and Bernard. She is also survived by her daughters Marcia(Don) Estergaard, Lana-Michele Armstrong and Jennifer(Roger) Taylor, her grandchildren Katelynn( William), Nicholas, Evan, Curtis, Cara, Elisa, Heather, Holly and Cassandra, and her great grandson Liam.
Geraldine’s memorial service will be held at Lana-Michele Armstrong’s home also previously Geraldine’s home in Pinantan Lake on Saturday July 18, 2020 at 1:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers a donation could be made to Battered Women’s Support Services in memory of Geraldine Sawin. This was a charity that Geraldine supported and believed in.
