December 27, 1954 — January 1, 2025
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our rock, Gerry McDonald. On January 1st, 2025, at the age of 70, Gerry passed away surrounded by loved ones. This is a massive loss for many, as Gerry was a friendly, generous, and genuine person to everyone.
Born in late December of 1954 in Arborfield, Saskatchewan, Gerry was the second oldest of five siblings. When the children were still young the family moved to Flin Flon, Manitoba and then Winnipeg before the big move to Kamloops in 1970. Having been a resident of Westsyde for 45 years, Gerry was the kind of man everyone knew and loved. In the winter after a snowfall, you could often find him plowing his neighbours driveways with his backhoe, because that is just the type of kind man he was. Gerry worked as an equipment operator for most of life and he was proud to own his own business. He built a strong reputation for himself as an owner operator. He travelled frequently for work, because as we know “Backhoe Ger Go Anywhere!” On his list of accomplishments, being a Dad seemed to come first. Gerry made sure to give his children a special childhood, filled with camping, snowmobiling, dirtbiking, fishing, and life lessons. He loved telling stories, as he had many from his travels and was known to share his vast amount of knowledge. Many looked to him as a guide and teacher.
Gerry was predeceased by his parents, Irene and Al, and his brothers, Mick and Tom. He is survived by his love, Barb and their children, Terina (James), Tara (Justin), and Monte (Jen). Along with his beloved grandchildren, Kaleigh, Julie, Brielle, Harper, and Colton. Also grieving this tremendous loss are his sisters, Anne (Paul), Connie (Steve), and many nieces and nephews. We cannot forget his adored dogs, who were always by his side. Many friends are left behind, as Gerry welcomed everyone with warmth and was able to make life long friendships wherever he went.
