Fisher (nee Leishman), Betty Jean

Posted Nov 6, 2016 | 4:48 PM

October 5, 1930 – October 13, 2016

Betty Fisher passed away peacefully at Gemstone Care Centre, Kamloops, BC, on October 13, 2016. She had lived a long and healthy life up until the past few years when she suffered from Alzheimer’s disease. Betty was 86 years of age.

Born on October 5, 1930 in Alliston, Ontario, Betty lived and grew up in North Bay, Ontario. She graduated from Ottawa Civic Hospital School of Nursing in 1952, and worked at Toronto General Hospital and St. Margaret’s Hospital in Toronto until 1958. Betty then took a position at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Marathon, Ontario. She met Dan Fisher in Marathon, and they married on September 19, 1959. In 1966 Betty moved to BC with her husband and two small children.

Betty is survived by: her husband, Daniel Fisher, residing in Kamloops, BC; son Joe Fisher and daughter-in-law Jackie and their daughter Lauren, all residing in Munsingen Switzerland; and daughter Karen Radic, nee Fisher and son-in-law Scott, and their children Nicole and Adam, all residing in Aurora, Ontario. Betty was predeceased by her mother, Luella Leishman, and her father, Clyde Leishman, both from North Bay, Ontario.

Betty’s career was important to her, as was her community involvement. She was a life time member of the Alumnae Association, Ottawa Civic Hospital School of Nursing; a long time member of the United Church of Canada; a volunteer for the Canadian Cancer Society, the Red Cross, the United Church and numerous other charitable organizations; and a volunteer for Census Canada.

Betty was also a great neighbour and friend to many, enjoying coffee and “lunch with the ladies” on a regular basis. She loved to garden, and was very proud of her home. She could often be found puttering in the yard or watering her lawn on a hot summer evening. Betty’s favourite hobby was photography. After her husbands’ retirement Dan and Betty travelled extensively in the southern US, Europe and the Far East where Betty captured these memories with her camera. She documented these travels and many family memories in nearly 100 photo albums and scrap books.

Betty cherished her home and her family. Despite living a great distance away from her two children, she was always very interested in their lives and the lives of her grandchildren, visiting them as often as possible and keeping in close contact. She will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered.

Private family arrangements have been entrusted to Drake Cremation & Funeral Services, 210 Lansdowne Street, Kamloops, BC, V2C 1X7, 250-377-8225. The family would like to thank the caring staff at Gemstone Care Centre in Kamloops. Online condolences may be sent to the family via www.DrakeCremation.com.
