August 27, 1931 — October 3, 2025
Esther Ho-A-Shoo (nee Lee), age 94, of Kamloops, B.C., passed away comfortably on October 3, 2025. Esther was born on August 27, 1931, in Pointe-A-Pierre, Trinidad and Tobago, a daughter of the late Isaac and Matilda Lee. Esther is survived by her daughter-in-law, Selny Lam, and blended children, Deanne Ho-A-Shoo (Debbie Wood) and Allan (Angie) Ho-A-Shoo. Her grandchildren include Caleb (Alyssia) Ho-A-Shoo, Tiffany Oei (Atal Khanal), and Kino Ho-A-Shoo. Preceded in death by her husband, John Ho-A-Shoo, eldest blended son, Raymond Ho-A-Shoo, brothers, Wilbur and Julien Lee, and brother-in-law, Al Vasenius. Surviving relatives are sister, Noreen Vasenius, sister-in-laws Lauretta and Ann Lee together with nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.
Esther became a Registered Dietician (RD) in California with a Master’s Degree (MA). She practiced as a full-time RD at Glendale Memorial Hospital and Health Centre, in Glendale, California. Mutual friends introduced Esther to John (her future husband), after a long distance courtship, they were wed at the Church of Angels in Forest Lawn Memorial Park-Hollywood Hills on December 14, 1970. After a two week honeymoon in Hawaii, Esther moved to Vancouver, B.C. Canada to live with John and his three children, Raymond, Deanne, and Allan. Esther took on the position of Administrator for Cambie Private Hospital, a long term care facility in Vancouver. She balanced her demanding and challenging work life with a busy home life of active and growing children, along with a husband who worked full-time as a dental surgeon.
Her lifetime devotion was to the Seventh Day Adventist Church, a Protestant Christian denomination who differs from mainstream Christianity by observing Saturday as the Sabbath, emphasizing the imminent Second Coming of Christ, and holding the writings of Ellen G. White in high regard. Many follow stricter health principles, including vegetarianism. In her later years, Esther became a dedicated vegan; her rule was “not to eat anything with a face and a mother”. In addition to her vegan diet, fresh air before the wildfires started in B.C. in 2017, and faithful consumption of Shaklee vitamins and supplements, for over 30 years, may have contributed and blessed Esther to live a long and wonderful life of her choosing. “Life is a matter of choices, and every choice you make, makes you.” John C. Maxwell.
After John’s death in 1994, Esther moved to Monte Lake, B.C., a tiny community, with a negligible permanent population. She lived alone in a duplex with Eric (now deceased) and Alice (his wife), Esther’s duplex neighbours. Esther was following the command of Luke 21:21 “Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country not enter the city” to escape a time of future destruction. For Christians, this passage also serves as a reminder to be prepared and watchful for Jesus’ second coming, as well as to avoid being consumed by the anxieties of this world.
Esther was a supporter of Amazing Facts, (Biblical Prophecy) and 3ABN Broadcasting, (3 Angels Broadcasting Network). When family visited her in the Monte Lake Duplex on 20 acres, she had the satellite installed to play 3ABN for 18 hours a day. She was focused on the hope of the Lord’s imminent 2nd coming. She reflected and shared that the second coming is near in every phone call made to her. She purchased a 3ABN study Bible with Ellen G. White commentary. One of her underlined texts was Proverbs 23: 1-4. “The Lord is my shepherd I shall not want…. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”
Esther’s 94 year old mind and body could no longer wait for the second coming of Jesus. Her spirit has crossed the bridge between Earth and Heaven. She is surrounded with other beloved family and friends with Jesus by her side. The family would like to thank Parkside Community Assisted Living and Overlander Long Term Care for their exceptional care, compassion, support, and kindness to Esther.
Interment Services will take place at Ocean View Cemetery (4000 Imperial Street, Burnaby, BC V5J 1A4). Esther’s urn will have its permanent resting place in the cemetery plot of John and Raymond Ho-A-Shoo.
