September 13, 1932 — July 12, 2026

It is with sad hearts that we announce that our mother, Joy, passed away peacefully in Kamloops, B.C., on July 12, 2026, at the age of 93 with her children at her side.

Born in Vancouver on September 13, 1932, Joy called North Vancouver home before moving to Kamloops in 2020 to be closer to family. She met her beloved husband, George Richard (Dick) Nicolls, at a YMCA dance and they were married in Vancouver at St. Margaret’s Cedar Cottage in 1957. A teacher before becoming a fulltime mother, Joy believed deeply in the power of education. She created a home full of learning and adventure — including a family cross-Canada trip in 1976 that fostered a love of history and the natural world in her children. Her commitment to learning was inspired by her mother, Dorothy Johnson, who taught in one-room schools in British Columbia (including Errington and ‘up’ the Chilliwack River). Raised in remote and rural communities by an intelligent, hardworking mother, shaped Joy’s worldview and her lifelong commitment to equality.

Joy loved the West Coast, especially the forests that housed birds and wildflowers. She enjoyed family holidays to Long Beach, as well as Denman and Galiano Islands. Beach-combing at low tide was a favourite activity, and only shells that were no longer in use were ever considered for collection. She was a devoted parishioner of Saint Catherine’s Anglican Church and an active member of the Guild. In her youth, Joy participated in the Anglican Youth Ministry, attended Normal School in Vancouver and treasured the friends she made along the way. Warm, steady, and compassionate, she had a rare gift for comforting those in need and celebrating others’ joys. A wonderful cook and gracious hostess, Joy took care to make every gathering special, entertaining family and friends with thoughtful menus and lively conversation. She loved to stay informed and always listened to CBC as she “puttered about the house.” Joy delighted in reading and sharing stories and ideas. She was known for her clear and informed opinions.

Joy is survived by her daughter, Alison Sidow (Jeff Sidow); her son, Ken Nicolls (Kathy McIntyre); and, her cherished grandchildren Michael, Rebecca, Riley, Katie, and Keenan. She was predeceased by her husband, George Richard (Dick) Nicolls, and her brother John (Neil) Sutherland. Joy was cared for at Kamloops Seniors Village for the last several years; the family is deeply grateful to the staff for their kindness and professionalism.

A private memorial will be held at Saint Catherine’s Anglican Church in North Vancouver on September 12 at 10:30 a.m.
