Dorothy Jean Ethel Atkins began her life in Thunder Bay Ontario. She was born Doris Burton on May 21, 1930 to Michael and Edith Burton (Berthen). The struggles of the time resulted in Dorothy and her brother, Max Finholm, being raised in separate farm homes. Dorothy was adopted by Donald and Edith MacDonald, where she gained two sisters, Flora and Margaret, and two brothers, Barry and Norman.
Dorothy married Donald (Bud) Skinn in 1949. She moved to the Yukon and then to BC in 1955 where she lived in many communities over the years with her daughter Marg. She married Reginald Atkins in 1976 and worked as a bookkeeper until retirement in 1997 when she moved to Kamloops to be closer to family.
Dorothy was an excellent cook and baker as well as a skilled bookkeeper. She loved to travel and amongst her fondest memories were exploring Australia and Vancouver Island in her retirement years. These stories were often shared over a glass of fine wine!
Dorothy was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, and loved to play Bingo right up until the week of her passing. She enjoyed reading, playing cards, was an avid sports fan and would always offer her opinion on politics. She could frequently be found scooting the sidewalks of Kamloops, like nobody’s business!
Our mom and grandma was a hard worker, self-sufficient with a strong independent spirit. She always lived life with gumption. Dorothy taught us all to make best of the hand you are dealt.
Dorothy will be missed by her daughter Marg (Darrel) Johnson, granddaughters Danya (Warren) Edwards, Dara Johnson and Michaela (Colin) Swan; and great-grandchildren Jordyn, Tylor, Anderson, Gloria, Maya and Chloe.
Our family would like to thank the residents of Greenfield Place who provided a sense of community and friendship to Dorothy in the last few years and to the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Hospice House who embraced and supported our family on Dorothy’s final journey. She passed quietly away on February 26, 2016.
