“Hornet,” “Hornball,” “Papa”

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Donald Barry Horning, lovingly known by many nicknames— “Hornet,” “Hornball,” and most meaningfully, “Papa” to his granddaughters-on July 25, 2025, at the age of 66 in Magna Bay, BC. Don was taken far too soon, leaving behind a legacy of strength, humor, and deep love for his family and friends.

Born and raised in Kamloops, BC, Don lived a life full of purpose and dedication. He began his working years in the logging industry and as a driller for his father, before proudly serving as a correctional officer and later a correctional supervisor.

He retired at the age of 55, after a long and respected career. After that, Don spent his happiest days at the lake in Magna Bay, where he loved spending his summers. Many of the friends he spent time with out there were people he had grown up with. He especially enjoyed being out on his pontoon—fishing, cruising the lake, and taking his granddaughters tubing. Those times at the lake meant the world to him and were some of the best days of his life.

Don is survived by his beloved wife Rodicel, his cherished daughter Britany (Dustin), his cherished son Brendon, and his treasured granddaughters Haven and Kinley. He will also be deeply missed by numerous in-laws, nieces, nephews, and the many friends whose lives he touched.

Don will be remembered for his sharp wit, loyal nature, and the fierce love he held for his family. Whether on the job, at home, or with friends, he brought strength, laughter, and honesty to every part of his life.

He wouldn’t want this to be a time of sorrow, but rather a celebration of the good times, the laughs shared, and the memories made. Don lived fully, loved fiercely, and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

A private gathering will be held in his honour, in keeping with Don’s wishes. Raise a glass, share a story, or spend time with those you love-just as Don would have wanted.
