September 14, 1953 – May 25, 2022
With broken hearts we share that Dave Burgess passed away on May 25, 2022 at 5:08pm at the Royal Inland Hospital with his wife, Debora, and daughter, Montana, by his side. He had a short one-month struggle with an aggressive blood cancer and we don’t quite know how to comprehend this loss.
Dave is someone who everyone seemed to know and love; he’d do anything for his friends and family, especially the apple of his eye, his granddaughter, Persephone. He hosted the best parties, made the best food, took such pride in his love for his wife. He was a dreamer, always imagining his next endeavour and had big plans for his future, full of camping, hunting and fishing with his wife and friends.
David Philip Burgess was born on September 14, 1953 in Saskatoon. He married his beloved wife Deb in 1981 at Roche Lake. Dave, Deb and their daughters, Lucy and Montana, moved from Calgary to Kamloops in 1991 to pursue a dream. Dave and Deb created a very special place in Kamloops, The Grind Coffee House, which he helped foster a safe space for misfits, artists, musicians, our regular “Grinders”, and generations of kids who affectionately called him Uncle Krusty. They were the first coffee roasters in town and brought the coffee house culture to the Kamloops community.
Dave had a food truck before they were cool. While running the Grind, in 1994/5, Dave and Deb opened the Pump Truck Espresso Bar in a 1950s fire truck, and started the family food truck, the Bellringer Bus in 2013. He pushed for the City to make space for food trucks in Kamloops. He loved this City and always wanted to bring more culture and vibrancy.
Our hearts are broken that our dear husband, dad, brother, uncle, and grandpa is gone but we feel all your love and it will help us heal. Dave is survived by his wife Debora, his daughter Lucy, her husband Clayton (to whom Dave was the father he never had), their daughter Persephone; his daughter Montana (Steve), and their child Bearstowe; his sisters Judy (Mitch) and Jill (Byron), and their children (Chelsea, Tyson, Joey, and Mike) and their grandchildren; his brothers Rod (Marianne) and Rick (Sherry) and their children (Kristi, Jenny, Katie, Georgia and Molly); his Uncle Alan (Brenda) and cousins; his best friends Craig, Frank, Mike, and Holger, and his many many other dear friends.
Friends are invited to celebrate his life and love of a good party at The Dave Burgess Experience on June 4. Contact the family for details.
Dave loved to feed and help people. Instead of flowers, please make a donation in memory of Dave to the Kamloops Food Bank.
We miss you.
