March 21, 1936 – November 26, 2025
Long time Merritt residents Curtis Frederick George Fox, age 89, and Julia (Julie) Verona Fox (nee Balogh), age 87, passed away November 26, 2025, and December 7, 2025.
Curtis and Julie exchanged marriage vows at Penticton, B.C. on February 14, 1958, and settled in Merritt in 1961 where they raised their three daughters. Curtis and Julie are survived by children Debbie (Ken), Cindy (Paul), Tammy (Bart), grandchildren Lisa and Matt, Curtis’ siblings Karen and Keith (Delores), and Julie’s sisters Violet, Shirley, and Sylvia (Don).
Curtis entered the world March 21, 1936, shortly after his young mother Grace (Stevenson) endured her first labour aboard a CPR “speeder” transporting her from home in Claire, Saskatchewan to the doctor in nearby Wadena. Son of Alfred Frederic Fox, Curtis was predeceased by sister Faye. Julie was born April 10, 1938, at Lethbridge, Alberta to parents Bert and Julia (nee Radi) Balogh and is predeceased by brothers-in-law Julius and Ray.
A shift supervisor at Craigmont Mines, and a well-known carpenter and respected building contractor until 1993, Curtis had a hand in the construction or renovation of many Merritt homes and businesses. Although Curtis’ formative decades in Cawston were economically tough and marred by the loss of his father, with the support of his loving spouse of 67 years, seven-day work weeks and much sacrifice and hard work, Curtis and Julie persevered to build a successful life and family in Merritt. Julie is remembered as a nurturing mom, keen swimmer and curler, and for baking great lemon pies. Curtis, an avid reader blessed with a sharp memory and quick wit, was known for his passionate and fiercely defended alternate viewpoints to most opinions coming his way. During their retirement years, Julie and Curtis enjoyed traveling to warm foreign locales, and each year spent many RV months soaking up the Arizona sunshine. In their final years, Curtis devoted long hours to supporting the love of his life through her time of need at Gillis House.
Heartfelt thanks to the professional and caring staff at Nicola Valley Hospital and at Gillis House for their exemplary care through Curtis and Julie’s final weeks and hours. In memory of the Foxes, please consider a donation to Gillis House, Nicola Valley Hospital, or research programs at cancer.ca.
You may offer a message of condolence at Merritt Funeral Chapel for the Fox family.
