Cook, Andrew Johnston

Posted Jul 12, 2016 | 3:56 PM

October 14, 1930 – June 30, 2016

It is with much sorrow that we announce the passing of Andrew Johnston Cook, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle and friend. Andrew was born in Kelowna to Andrew and Jean Cook on October 14, 1930 and passed away in Kamloops on June 30, 2016. Andrew left school at 17 years of age and went to work for the Department of Highways; he started as a Rodman and worked his way up to Levelman, Transitman and Draftsman. He married Audrey Huxley of Vernon in 1952. Together they moved around the province for eight years with the survey crew, their oldest son being born in Invermere and their daughter in Burns Lake. In 1960 he transferred to Nelson where their youngest son was born. They built a house on Nasookin Road where they lived for 54 years. After moving to Nelson, Andrew learned to play the bagpipes and played with the Kootenay Kiltie Pipe Band for 35 years, he became a Mason and a Shriner. In 1974 he transferred to the Ministry of the Environment with the Water Management branch retiring in 1986 after 37 years with the government. He enjoyed a long and happy retirement spending many hours fishing and gardening. They had many trips together but their first was to Scotland where his parents had immigrated from just before he was born. He was a true Canadian but very proud of his Scottish heritage. In 2013 they decided it was time to move to Kamloops to be closer to family. Andrew passed away peacefully and quietly as he lived, with his wife of 64 years by his side. He is survived by his wife, two sons, Douglas (Gina), James (Emily) and his daughter Janet (Don), four grandchildren Christopher (Julie) and Jason Cook, Kristin (Jason) Riozzi and Adam Schleiermacher; three great grandchildren Oliver Ash and MacAllister Andew (Mac) Riozzi and Ava Dawn Cook. Andrew was predeceased by his parents, three brothers and three sisters. We would like to thank the Home Care Program, one and all for the help they have given Andrew. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to the wonderful, caring nursing staff at the Hospice House. Thank you Dr. Brenda Laupland for being there for us. If you wish, memorial donations may be made to the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Hospice House or a charity of your choice. A Ceilidh in honour of Andrew will be held on Sunday, August 14, 2016 at 3 pm in the Hal Rogers Centre in Kamloops.
