Thank you to all our friends and family, near and far, who have surrounded us as we grieve the passing of Christopher Gordon Vollans, who God called home suddenly on March 31.
Chris was born in Vernon, B.C., and grew up most of his life in the small country town of Vavenby, B.C. It is here where he developed a strong love and connection with the great outdoors; the mountains, rivers, and lakes galore. He enjoyed some of the simplest pleasures in life, such as a quiet afternoon in his fishing boat with his dear Pops, or an evening spent outside talking with his Mamma-bear over a bowl of her famous popcorn. Savoring his favorite meals with loud conversation and laughter amidst our large family table brought him great joy too.
As the second child of five, and the oldest of the boys, he was feisty and did not miss an opportunity to tease or spur on his siblings. He was not afraid to stand up for what he thought was right and he was the first to be there when any of the family needed it. Chris graduated from Barriere, B.C. and started his working life in the food industry. He quickly moved from the dish pit to prep chef, eventually becoming a chef at many different restaurants including White Spot in Vernon, B.C.
In the early 2000’s he began working in the sales industry where he suffered a workplace accident resulting in a back injury. His recovery was long and painful, and it was during this time that he studied to become a social worker. Often, Chris could be found in downtown Kamloops advocating and supporting individuals struggling with addictions and homelessness. He volunteered and was employed with various agencies such as The Mustard Seed, Ask Wellness, Axis Family Resources, and Prima. Chris worked hard to serve his clients and took delight in knowing that his work was making a difference in others’ lives. This was where he found his greatest joy and took pride in these accomplishments.
In more recent years Chris lived with Ashley and her two sons. They enjoyed camping, fishing, spending time with friends, and doing life together. They also enjoyed spending holidays and special weekends in Vavenby with the family. He loved being an uncle and great-uncle to his nine nieces and nephews, and his great-niece and nephew.
He is predeceased by his near and dear brother, Matthew Vollans, and his cherished Oma (Marie Visser) and Opa (Art Visser). He is survived by his Mama Bear and Pops, Mary and Gord Vollans, his brother Andrew Vollans (Sandra Mortimor), his two sisters Tanya Elwood (Neil Elwood) and Carla Young (Jon Young), his sister-in-law Jill Vollans (Matt Vollans), and his nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles. He will be missed by us all, but we take solace in knowing he is ‘gone fishing’ and we will see him when God calls us home.
The family encourages anyone wishing to make a donation to contact The Mustard Seed in Kamloops, BC at Ways to Give | Mustard Seed (theseed.ca).
You may offer a message of condolence at Schoening Funeral Service for the Vollans family.
