September 19, 1949 – July 19, 2020
Brian Francis Hosek died on July 19th, 2020, after an epic eight year battle with cancer. Although his body was ravaged by the disease, his strength, courage and bravery shone through and was a wonder to all that knew and loved him.
Brian was born in Lethbridge, Alberta in 1949 and was raised in Kamloops BC. After getting his private pilots license in Kamloops, at age sixteen, he went on to be a bush pilot in northern Saskatchewan and then an airline pilot with Air BC. Brian forged many deep and long lasting friendships with his flying buddies and had an amazing group of life long friends that loved and cared for him right up to the end.
Brian is survived by his father, Frank Hosek, his brother Don Hosek, Don’s wife Carolyn and his sister Karen Jackson. He is also survived by his uncle, two aunts and many, many cousins in Alberta. Brian was predeceased by his mother, Patricia, who died in 2008.
Brian retired from flying and found a new passion of looking after the land on his hobby farm on the banks of the South Thompson river. Once again, he developed close friendships with his neighbours, who were always there to lend a helping hand and look out for Brian when his health and mobility began to fail. Three fur kids had the ideal home life on the farm, with Brian as their devoted and very indulgent caregiver.
Sadly, Brian had to give up his farm and move back into the city, as medical appointments increased in frequency. He resided in Berwick for the last two years of his life and we will be forever grateful for the loving care and attention he received while there.
For all of us who loved and cared for Brian, I believe we are united in our feelings of grief and sadness that he is no longer with us. However, we also know that he suffered more physical pain than any person should have to suffer in a lifetime and, because of this, there is solace to be had in the fact that his suffering is over. So, keep a look out everyone, I’m sure that Brian will take to the skies again and make a point of flying over your homes to dip his wing for a final farewell.
