April 11, 1944 – February 21, 2024
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Barbara Ann Martyn of Kamloops, B.C., on February 21, 2024, at 79 years of age. Barbara is survived by her children Chuck (Mona) Martyn of Surrey, B.C., and Cindy (Rob) Hogeveen of Kamloops, B.C., as well as grandchildren Amber (Adrian) Martyn, William (Briane) Hogeveen and Emily Hogeveen, as well as great-grandchildren Alexander, Miller, Isabelle, and Robbie. Also left to cherish her memory are siblings Eileena Cottingham, Wilf Gibbard, June (Cal) Wilson, and George (Ruth) Gibbard, as well as many nieces and nephews. Barbara was predeceased by her grandson Justin Martyn, and brother-in-law Stewart Cottingham.
Barbara (Bubby, Mom, Gramma) was born in North Vancouver on April 11th, 1944. She lived in many places in B.C, the longest in Sicamous which she called home for almost 25 years before moving to Kamloops for the final year and a half of her life. .
Bubby loved to laugh, and her laugh was infectious; before you knew it everyone in the room would be laughing with her. Gramma was a kid at heart. She would get down on the floor, when the grandchildren were young, to play. She dared to go on crazy-carpet rides, and other shenanigans. She loved crosswords, scotch mints, and Red Rose tea. Mom’s favourite people were dogs! She loved them completely.
Mom cooked the best perogies and pies. She was a great cake decorator. She owned her own convenience store for several years: “The Odd Spot” in Powell River. It was her happiest workplace.
Mom loved to give gifts and would diligently look for treasures for the person she was gifting. She had many collections and always wanted others to collect things too so she could help them expand their collections. She was ever the wearer of cute hats.
Barbara loved going on cruises and travelling with her sister “Tink”. Let us not forget “Blue Whites.”
And, as the fondest of memories, Mom would stand in the driveway at the end of a visit and wave until the visitor was long out of sight.
And now… we wave back!
