1923 – 2016
Our mother, Mary, was born on September 14, 1923 in St. Julian, Saskatchewan. She was 92 years old when she passed, the oldest child of Nick and Polly Bodnarchuk.
Mom is survived by her sister Jean of Toronto and is predeceased by her sibling Robert, Andrew, Jules and Vicky. She married John George Balan in Waka, Saskatchewan. They lived in Saskatoon until 1954, Toronto until 1964 And in Vancouver until 1992, and then moved to Kamloops.
In Kamloops they worked to establish the Orthodox Church along with the wonderful life-long friendships that came with this community. Mom is survived by her children Ray, Stephen, Bernice (Herb), and Robert (Marj), the youngest, as well as by her grandchildren; Kim, Terry, Michael, Carolyn, Christina and Robyn and her great grandchildren, Cody, Clive, Clayton, Terrell, Chelsea, Leyland and Kason.
Mom was predeceased by her husband John in 1996, her daughter Joan in 1947 and son Terry in 1965. She is also survived by a large extended family and friends across Canada-many nieces, nephews and in-laws. She is also Godmother to her many wonderful nieces; Angela, Patsy, Darlene, Karen Anne and Amy.
Mom and Dad travelled the country for many years – to Saskatoon, Toronto and in between. Anyone remember that little red Toyota camper that would show up at any time?
She had a remarkable memory for dates and always remembered something special from each of us. Her love of her family, friends, and community, along with her pride and joy in them all, and especially the young children, were the highlights of her long life. When working at the Hall, she “owned” the Canteen on Bingo nights and standard place at banquets was at the holoptsy table.
Mom shared a very active life with her community and her family. The young will always cherish their time with Baba, and all her stories and recipes. She always tried to teach us something of the past and traditions.
It is a very kind and loving grand lady whose life we celebrate here today.
Oh yes, they are both now back in that little red Toyota, continuing with their travels.
The Funeral Service for Mary Balan will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday, July 7, 2016 in the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of All Saints, 1044 8th St, Kamloops, with Reverend Father Roman Tsaplan, Celebrant.
