April 6, 1940 – October 25, 2016
Mo Aboussafy passed away in peace, comfort, and dignity, surrounded by love at Ridgeview Lodge, Kamloops on the morning of October 25, 2016.
Mo was born to Myrtle and Elie Aboussafy in Eckville, Alberta on April 6, 1940. He had a full and happy childhood in Wetaskiwin, Alberta which included fostering an interest in commerce by working in the Aboussafy General Store from an early age, standing on a crate to reach the till. In High School, Mo was part of the undefeated central Alberta champion football team that was later inducted into the Wetaskiwin Sports Hall of Fame. Mo completed his secondary schooling early, sailed to Hawaii as a Sea Cadet, and started at the University of Alberta at age 17. He earned a Bachelor of Commerce at the U of A three years later in 1960. This was followed by earning his Chartered Accountant designation in 1963.
Mo began his professional accounting career with Coopers and Lybrand. Mo then spent 19 years with the Genstar Corporation in Edmonton, San Francisco and Vancouver. Mo finished his working career with 18 years as Controller for Weyerhauser Canada in Kamloops, BC. In his work and life, Mo was a man of great integrity with a deep commitment to his values, and was never too busy to help a friend or an associate. He contributed to his church and community with considerable volunteer work for organizations including Junior Achievement, the Terry Fox Foundation, and the BC Heart and Stroke Foundation. Mo was an avid Edmonton Eskimo fan since the 1950’s.
Mo met the love of his life and best friend Joyce Ann Callaghan in Hamilton, Ontario while working for Coopers and Lybrand. They married on May 11, 1968, and renewed their vows 45 years later to the day in Victoria, BC. Mo is survived by his beloved wife Joy, his children David (Melanie), Bridget (Darren); grandchildren Davin, Emily and Abigail; sister Elaine (Ed), sister-in-law Mary Lou, brother-in-law Ron, nieces, nephews and many dear friends. His grandchildren were a special delight and very dear to him.
Mo dealt with significant heart disease since 2000. With strong support, care and treatment advocacy from his wife Joy, he was able to beat some long odds and survive to continue his volunteer work and to enjoy his grandchildren for many years. This included laughing with his granddaughters two weeks before his death, despite profound congestive heart failure, and vascular dementia. Special thanks to family physician Dr. F. Kruger, cardiologist Dr. J. Steyn, and the staff at Ridgeview Lodge for outstanding care and compassion. Very special thanks to dear friends Jim and Bev Mundle for always being there for Mo. Deep appreciation to the good neighbours on Glen Gary Drive.
Mo was very much loved by those who knew him; his kindness and gentleness will be deeply missed by colleagues, friends, and family.
A prayer service will be held on Friday, November 4, 2016 at 7 p.m., and a mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday, November 5, 2016 at 11 a.m., at Sacred Heart Cathedral, 255 Nicola Street, Kamloops, BC.
