Open Learning Building at TRU closed due to flooding

KAMLOOPS — Some major water problems have caused a building on the TRU campus to shut down.

Darshan Lindsay is the communications director for the university, and she says the Open Learning Building could be closed until the end of the weekend.

“Unfortunately we’ve had to close the building for at least the remainder of today, likely for the weekend at this time,” she says. “It’s the result of flooding that has impacted the first floor of the building and the flooding is a result of a water pipe failure.”

The cause of the failure is not known at this time.

There is a transit exchange outside of the building, and Lindsay says TRU has worked with the city to have transit re-routed to the west entrance.

“The open learning building itself, the first floor predominantly it’s our IT services where some of our staff are, and then we have another room there that’s used for meetings,” she says. “So the impact on students other than, unfortunately, not being able to enter the building today at this time is somewhat minimal. I’m not sure that the building’s actually in use over the weekend.”

Lindsay says with water and live wires both being present, power needed to be shut down while the situation is assessed.

The first floor will be closed until flood repair work is completed, but Lindsay says the other three floors will be open next week.
