Canada Russia hockey series begins tonight in Kamloops

KAMLOOPS — The 16th Canada-Russia junior hockey series kick starts tonight at the Sandman Centre.

It’s the first of two games against the Western Hockey League, with the other four against the Ontario and Quebec Leagues.

Overall the Western League is 20-7-1-2 against Russia since the start of the Canada-Russia Series in 2003.

The Canada-Russia series is considered a tune-up, of sorts, for the World Junior Championship, to be played this year in Vancouver and Victoria.

This will be the fourth time a game has been played in Kamloops.

In 2006 the WHL won 8-1, Russia took the 2010 game in Kamloops with a 7-6 shootout win, while the WHL won in 2015 by a 4-2 score.

There are no Blazers on the WHL roster.
