KAMLOOPS — A 35 year old man is behind bars after police allege he drunkenly followed a young girl on her way to school this morning.

Kamloops RCMP Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says it all started at 8:00 a.m., when a 12 year old girl was walking to pick up a friend before going on to school at Lloyd George Elementary.

"A man walking down the street called out to her," she says. "Since she didn't know the man, and he appeared to be following her, the student quickly went to her friend's house. The friend's mother saw the stranger as he approached her property. She called the police."

Shelkie says police attended the scene and found him to be "impaired."

"He claimed a case of mistaken identity. He thought he knew the girl and that is why he was calling out to her and following her," she says. "After further investigation, it was found that the man has warrants out of the Lower Mainland. He was arrested and is in custody, waiting to go before a judge."

Shelkie says the man is known to police.
