Kamloops nature parks to remain open — for now

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops Fire Rescue says it has contemplated closing Kamloops nature parks to the public, but the move is not yet necessary.

Nature parks were closed on July 8 last year due to the extreme risk that led to the record 2017 fire season.

They were closed a second time on August 8 when the extreme risk returned.

Chief Mike Adams says the fire danger has not been as high within the City of Kamloops this year.

“We’ve been looking at the fire danger rating in our area, monitoring the weather and speaking with our partnering agencies — BC Wildfire Service being one of them,” said Adams. “Obviously, there are many factors that would trigger the closure of the park, but right now we’re comfortable with the park remaining open. We’re looking at a favourable change in the weather later this week, and hopefully that will get us through to the end of summer.”

Adams says the public can help by reporting fires quickly when they see them.

“Interface fire danger in Kamloops is ever-present, especially during the summer months. We rely heavily on the public for early detection and with the smoke conditions that we had last week and into this week, early detection is important. So if they were to spot anything that resembles a fire or if they’re concerned, please phone 911 and KFR will respond,” said Adams.
