MERRITT — A family of fraudsters allegedly involved in the sale of jewelry has been arrested in Merritt and are now facing deportation hearings in Vancouver.

Merritt RCMP Staff Sgt. Lorne Wood says the arrests occurred yesterday (June 21) following a report of a possibly impaired driver which lead investigators to a parked car at a local hotel.

“Investigators determined that the individuals were wanted criminals who are part of a family group from Eastern Europe,” he says. “Family members have been the subject of warnings and police investigations for a string of thefts and frauds across Canada. Some of the family members already had Canada-wide arrest warrants related to their immigration status.”

He says the family group is known to have links to Eastern European organized crime and has been the subject of several police investigations and public safety announcements as they would defraud stores and target vulnerable people.
