Cherry Creek gas station burns to the ground

KAMLOOPS — The Cherry Creek gas station burned to the ground overnight, forcing the closure of the Trans Canada in that area, and a tactical evacuation of a manufactured home park nearby.

RCMP Sergeant Brandon Buliziuk says crews got the call about 12:30 this morning.

The station and a residence that forms part of the structure were completely engulfed.

Because of the potential of the fire spreading, police closed the highway and evacuated a number of residents. The fire was outside the jurisdiction of the Kamloops Fire Department, but the New Afton Fire Department responded and worked to contain the fire.

Utility companies shut down the power and other services so crews could fight the blaze.

Residents were allowed to return to their homes just after 3:30 this morning, and the highway was reopened.

No indication of a cause at this point. One nearby resident told CFJC Today it looked like the fire might have started in the attached residence and spread from there, but that hasn’t been confirmed at this stage.
