Pattersons sharing in experience of both playing in Memorial Cup

KAMLOOPS — When Swift Current won the WHL championship over Everett on Sunday night, Kamloops native Max Patterson was right in the middle of the celebration.

The win for Patterson meant he was following in his dad Ed’s footsteps, playing in a Memorial Cup 26 years after Ed won with the Blazers in 1992.

“It’s pretty cool. I actually looked up some stats. I think there’s only one other father-son combo to win it as players,” ,” says Ed, who helped the Blazers win their first Memorial Cup ever. “A French guy and his son from 2000 or something, so it’d be pretty neat if Swift Current can pull it off. We’d be the second only father-son combo to win the Cup as players.”

The Pattersons leave on Sunday for Regina. They’ll miss the Broncos first game on Saturday against the Quebec champions Acadie-Bathurst Titan.

But the drive will be a trip down memory lane for both Ed and his parents.

“It’s kind of neat. My wife and I and my mom and dad are all going to go out together,” he notes. “My dad was there in Seattle [in 1992] when we won with Kamloops years ago and he’s reliving it more than I am right now.”

Ed says watching the Memorial Cup from the stands as a parent will be a lot different than competing on the ice.

“You have a little bit of control as a player and you’re lost in the moment, whereas parents they have nothing to do but worry about each shift and each outcome,” he says. “But we’re just going to go there and enjoy it. We’re going to satay out of it. No advice, just going to enjoy it as parents and hope they enjoy it as players and have success.”

Patterson says his Memorial Cup experience was memorable, even beyond winning it all. The bond between teammates and having a small role in Zac Boyer’s famous game-winning goal with 14 seconds left.

“I had a shift of a minute down low with Jarrett Deuling and Todd Johnson. I took a puck to the net and went to jam it in and got speared,” Patterson remembers. “Threw up in the crease, threw up on the blueline, dove into the bench and Zac jumped out for a breakaway and scored.”

Patterson says it would an amazing feeling if the Broncos can get through the final and win it.

“I don’t want to overlook it, but definitely would be pretty cool. There’s a handful of games ahead. You have to get to the final first, and then you’ve got to win the final, so there’s lots of steps in between. But even just the fact that we both got there. There’s probabaly not a whole lot of father and sons that have won WHL championships. That’s a huge thing. If they were to pull it off, it would be unbelieveable.”
