BC records enormous spike in overdose deaths in March

VICTORIA — BC has seen a troubling spike in overdose deaths.

The latest statistics from the BC Coroners Service show 161 deaths from overdoses of illicit drugs in March, making it the second-deadliest month on record in the province.

It’s also a massive 58 per cent jump from the previous month, as there were only 102 overdose deaths in February.

The highest total ever for BC came in December of 2016, when there were 162 overdose deaths recorded.

Kamloops has seen 12 people die after overdosing so far this year, putting the city on pace for its highest total ever.

The city had 39 recorded overdose deaths in 2017.

According to the coroners service, more than 90 per cent of the overdose deaths recorded took place indoors, and none have occurred at supervised consumption sites or overdose prevention sites.
