KAMLOOPS — An alleged drunk driver was arrested Sunday night driving the wrong way on the Trans Canada Highway.

Kamloops RCMP Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says police were notified at 11:30 p.m. that a male, suspected of being impaired, was leaving Cascades Casino on Versatile Drive.

“A police officer was dispatched to the call. While driving on the Trans Canada Highway the officer saw the suspect vehicle travelling towards him in the wrong lane,” she says. “After the vehicle passed, the officer did a U-turn and attempted to follow the suspect with his lights and sirens on.”

Shelkie says about 150 metres past the Columbia Street overpass, the suspect vehicle collided with a parked snow-clearing vehicle.

She says the suspect then got out of his car and attempted to run away.

“An employee with the highways crew attempted to detain the suspect by verbally engaging with him until the police arrived on scene and he was taken into custody.”

Shelkie says the suspect suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital. She says the highways vehicle driver involved in the collision was also sent to hospital with minor injuries.

“Alcohol is believed to be the contributing factor to the collision,” she says. “An impaired investigation is ongoing.”
