KAMLOOPS — Chief Ron Ignace has been re-elected to another three year term as chief of the Skeetchestn Indian Band.

Ignace was first elected chief in 1982 and with the exception of a six-year hiatus in between, has been chief ever since.

"I'd like to thank all the voters that came out and voted in our community election," he told CFJC Today. "I was honoured by the people to have chosen me to stand as chief again and look forward to providing good leadership to the community and continue to fight for our Aboriginal title and rights just as we did on the Ajax Mine issue."

He says his most recent accomplishment came last week in Ottawa when he had a resolution passed which he says "will lead to legislative recognition for all Indigenous languages in law across Canada."

Ignace was the winner of a three-way race for mayor. Janet Deneault finished second and Ross McNab third.

Darrel Draney, Marshall Gonzales and Tracy Hewitt were elected as councillors.

Terry Deneault and Charlotte Taylor tied for the fourth and final spot. A byelection will be held next week to decide who the winner is.
