Contractor confusion leads to delay in Westsyde Pool renovation

KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops says a contractor mistake has forced it to press pause on the renovation of the Westsyde Pool.

The city says the wrong building materials, a batch of panels for the roof deck, were delivered to the site, and partially installed by the contractor.

According to a news release, the wrong panels would result in decreased durability, leading the city to decide to remove them and start over with the right panels.

Capital Projects Manager Darren Crundwell says there’s no doubt this problem will force a delay in the re-opening of the pool.

“We’re working with the contractor right now to come up with the right solution, so I can’t really comment on the exact delays,” said Crundwell.

“We know it’s going to be in the order of months, not weeks. It depends on the materials and how quickly we can get them.”

Crundwell notes the error was not the city’s responsibility, so the contractor will be forced to cover the cost, meaning the mistake will not result in a cost impact to taxpayers.
