KAMLOOPS —  Higher enrollment means more teachers. With more students in elementary schools in District 73 than anticipated, the Board approved the hiring of seven more teachers at its meeting on Monday night.

Superintendant Alison Sidow says the district can only come up with a rough estimate before school starts. It doesn’t get the true picture until the first few days of school, and then it has to react.

We’re up 115 students in kindergarten, which we’re really surprised about,” says Sidow. “Overall in elementary, we’re up 159 students over last year. So that would seem to indicate that the enrollment trend is beginning to take an upward tick, and we’re very, very pleased about that. The secondary enrollment is still down, but not to the extent we were anticipating.”
