Rivers Trail section may close due to erosion

KAMLOOPS — City of Kamloops parks staff are recommending council approve the permanent closure of a section of the Rivers Trail.

The portion affected is along the South Thompson River beneath the Yellowhead Bridge.

According to a report coming to council this week, that section of trail has eroded significantly thanks to water running off of the bridge itself.

The report states the provincial Ministry of Transportation is aware of the problem but won’t contribute to fixing it, leaving the city with the bill for a repair that could cost tens of thousands of dollars.

Staff say this section of trail is not well-used, with pedestrians abandoning it in favour of the newly-constructed pedestrian and bicycle bridge.
