KSAR volunteers conducting weekend training in Sun Peaks

SUN PEAKS B.C. — Volunteers from Kamloops Search and Rescue (KSAR) are back in Sun Peaks for a second day of training Sunday (Jan. 19).

In a post on social media, KSAR said Sunday’s training exercises were being done in collaboration with the Sun Peaks Ski Patrol. It will focus on SARTopo mapping and snow safety initiatives.

“Our snowmobile team will also be on the mountain to gain experience and enhance their skills in navigation, safe route finding, companion rescue, and conducting a toboggan towing shake-down,” KSAR said.

Volunteers also conducted winter rescue training on Saturday.

“We would like to express our gratitude to the Sun Peaks community and visitors for their warm welcome and ongoing support,” KSAR added. “While we appreciate the public’s support, we kindly ask that you give our team some space.”

KSAR president Paula Davies previously told CFJC Today that they plan to to hold a recruitment drive in the spring. The goal, she said, was to bolster the ranks after the busiest year on record.

“Kamloops Search and Rescue is made up of volunteer members who are dedicated to providing essential life-saving services around the clock, 365 days a year,” a KSAR statement said. “KSAR is called upon by the Emergency Coordination Center (ECC) to assist various agencies, including the RCMP, BC Emergency Health Services, and the BC Coroners Office.”

“Additionally, KSAR provides alerts and evacuation assistance during emergencies such as wildfires or floods, supporting civic and municipal governments in these situations.”
