Kamloops man accused of murdering his mother granted bail

KAMLOOPS — A 36-year-old Kamloops man accused of murdering his mother has been granted bail with a number of conditions after a hearing in B.C. Supreme Court on Thursday (Jan. 16).

Brandon Donovan is facing a second degree murder charge in the death of Jo-Anne Donovan. The 57-year-old’s body was found near the Westsyde-area home she shared with her son on March 22, 2023, nine days after she was last seen.

Donovan was arrested and charged in September last year, though the evidence that was presented in court on Thursday is protected by a publication ban.

Online court records showed Donovan was charged in connection with an offence on March 13, 2023 – the same day his mother was last seen. Jo-Anne Donovan was reported missing four days later, and an autopsy later confirmed that she was the victim of homicide.

Among Donovan’s many conditions is a requirement that he live at a recovery centre in Surrey. He will remain in custody until a bed opens up at the facility.

He is also required to abide by a 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew, and refrain from consuming drugs and alcohol, or possess a weapon. He is also required to surrender his passport to police.

Brandon Donovan is due back in court on Jan. 23.
