Cooler temperatures en route, but Kamloops expected to avoid extreme cold warning: Environment Canada

KAMLOOPS — The weekend is not raising flags for an extreme cold warning, but Kamloops is expected to enter a cooler snap compared to the warmer start of winter.

Environment Canada is forecasting Kamloops to see overnight low temperatures of -10 and -14 Celsius on Friday (Jan. 17) and Saturday night, with a daytime high of -6 in between.

Speaking to CFJC Today Monday (Jan. 13) morning, meteorologist Brian Proctor says winds from the north are expected to bring in colder air that’s been dammed in the northern and central parts of Yukon.

“We’ve got lots of computer guidance that’s suggesting things are going to remain that way through much of the upcoming work week in January,” Proctor says. “Some models are trying to hold it right through the work week, others try to moderate it a little bit faster than that. But in general terms, it looks like we’re remaining below normal temperature-wise for that work week from Jan. 20 to 25.”

When issuing an extreme cold warning, Proctor says Environment Canada looks for temperatures much cooler than the overnight lows Kamloops is expected to reach over the weekend. As of Monday, he doesn’t expect Kamloops to get close to minus 20 degrees, where the weather agency would show more concern.

“In southern B.C., it’s not just the cold, it’s also the windchill associated with that and how strong the winds are likely to be, which may be a bit more of a concern. A combination of factors moving forward,” Proctor says.

Additionally, as of Monday, Proctor says he wouldn’t be surprised if snowfall transpired during the cooler weekend.
