Marion Fern Hope

Posted Jan 10, 2025 | 4:37 PM

February 24, 1924 — December 22, 2024

Marion Hope, aged 100, passed away peacefully on December 22, 2024 in Vernon Jubilee Hospital surrounded by her four children and two daughters in law.

She was born in Kamloops on February 24, 1924, to Ada and Henry Pickering of Chu Chua. She moved to Armstrong in 1943 when she accepted her first teaching job at Armstrong Consolidated school. She married William George David (Dave) Hope on September 3, 1946 and they had four children, Edward (Ted), Patricia (Pat), George and Margaret. Marion had to stop teaching when she married but returned to the classroom in 1956. She taught elementary school full time until she retired in 1974. Marion and Dave lived on the farm from the time they were married until the farm was sold in 1987.

Marion’s interests were many but they all involved giving back to the community. The Armstrong Spallumcheen Museum and Art Gallery (ASMAS), the Interior Provincial Exhibition and the Anglican church were all part of Marion’s life. She was involved in planning the museum around 1980 and then volunteered regularly until just before her passing. The IPE included exhibiting the Jersey herd every year, encouraging her children to participate through 4-H, making her famous lemon meringue pies for the Anglican dining hall and working in the IPE office after she retired.

She was a long-time member of the Order of Eastern Star and the Daughters of the Nile. She was Armstrong’s Citizen of the year in 2005. One of her favorite pastimes was crocheting: after making afghans for all her family, she set about making them to be sold at church bazars and fundraisers.

Marion is survived by her brother, Wes Pickering, sons Ted (Sharon) and George (Irene), and daughters Pat Reimer and Marg Hope as well as six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her sister Jeannie Herdman, her husband, Dave and many friends and relatives.

We would like to thank Dr JP Viljoen and the staff at the Haugen Medical group in Armstrong for Marion’s on-going care and to Dr Devlin and Dr Honeywood and the staff at Vernon Jubilee Hospital for the care during the final days.

Memorials or donations may be made to ASMAS, The Haugen Society or a charity of your choice.
