Wildlife Park one step closer to new inclusive playground

KAMLOOPS – The BC Wildlife Park is another step closer to building a new accessible playground, after two successful fundraising campaigns.

The park recently wrapped up a 50/50 raffle and a WestJet flight raffle, raising nearly $18,000 for the project. These funds will contribute to the estimated $1 million cost of the inclusive playground.

“We think every individual deserves a safe, fun, enjoyable place to play, learn, and explore,” said Glenn Grant, BC Wildlife Park General Manager. “Within this accessible, inclusive playground, there will be other things like sign boards and sign language boards. So there’ll be more attributes than just play apparatuses.”

The new playground aims to cater to visitors of all abilities, providing a space where everyone can participate in recreational activities. Grant said that the equipment will be purchased and installed in sections as funding allows, ensuring the quickest possible usage for park visitors.

“We hosted two different raffles. One was a 50/50, which was a maximum of $20,000. So the winner got $10,000 and the park got $10,000. And we also had two flights for anywhere WestJet flies internationally,” Grant explained.

While the recent fundraisers have brought the park closer to its goal, there is still a significant amount to be raised before reaching the $1 million target. The park plans to break ground on the project this spring, pending further fundraising efforts.
