KAMLOOPS — If Kamloops residents are noticing more officers and road checks heading into the holiday season, it’s because there are more.

Kamloops RCMP say the Municipal Traffic Unit (MTU) and ICBC have been carrying out enhanced sobriety checks since Dec. 1 to help keep impaired drivers off the road.

Additionally, digital signboards have been placed through Kamloops reminding residents of the increased sobriety checks and to ensure they plan ahead for a safe ride home.

“There’s lots of time to plan ahead for holiday gatherings and New Year’s parties,” Cpl. Wayne Chung of the MTU states in a news release issued Friday (Dec. 20). “Enforcement efforts occur at all hours of the day and on all kinds of roadways, including major routes and back roads.”

When approaching a road check, drivers are requested to have their license and insurance ready to present to an officer, in order to keep traffic moving smoothly.

“Every CounterAttack shift we have removed impaired drivers from the roadway, which illustrates to you just how many people are taking chances and making choices that can lead to extremely devastating and preventable tragedies,” Cpl. Chung states.

Residents are encouraged to plan ahead by ensuring they have a designated driver, taxi or rideshare available, or use public transit or services such as Operation Red Nose.

RCMP say the Holiday CounterAttack will continue into the New Year.
