CSRD looking to lighten recycling tax burden, invest in new programs after striking new deal with Recycle BC

SALMON ARM, B.C. — The Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) is looking to lower the tax rate for its recycling service and fund new recycling programs thanks to a new five-year agreement.
The CSRD says Recycle BC – a non-profit organization responsible for B.C.’s residential packaging and paper recycling – worked with district staff and other local governments to develop new rates.
In a news release issued Thursday (Dec. 19), the CSRD says it and other regional districts argued that Recycle BC’s compensation for materials based on the weight of the recyclables collected didn’t cover the actual costs of staffing and carrying out their respective recycling programs.
“It is great to see that the lobbying efforts of the CSRD and others have not been overlooked. To Recycle BC’s credit, they have increased rates to help local governments offset the cost of providing recycling depot network service in B.C.,” Ben Van Nostrand, CSRD general manager, environmental and utility services. “It is good news for the CSRD as our depot program will now be fully funded. The savings will be used to lower the tax rate for the service and fund new recycling programs.”
