Food donations lacking as Christmas Amalgamated works to provide holiday meal hampers

KAMLOOPS — The holiday season is upon us and Christmas Amalgamated is sounding the alarm over a critical shortage of food donations for its annual meal hamper program.

Sally Whitson, coordinator for the local charity, reports that food contributions have been alarmingly low this year.

“People have not started with their donations of food. There’s very little food that has come in so far,” Whitson told CFJC News. “I’ve got just a few hampers and we’re hoping to get started tomorrow (Dec. 17).”

The organization, which aims to provide holiday meal packages to families in need, is set to begin deliveries imminently. However, the lack of donations threatens to impact their ability to meet the growing demand.

Whitson noted a significant increase in requests for assistance this year.

“We can’t even keep track of our numbers because things are still changing from day to day,” she explained. “We won’t know until we’re pretty much finished as to how many people are in need.”

Christmas Amalgamated, headquartered in the Cooper Centre, has been a cornerstone of holiday giving in Kamloops for years. This year, the charity aims to help 2,000 families in the region with food hampers and gifts.

While non-perishable items are always welcome, Whitson encourages donors to consider contributing items typically found on their own Christmas dinner tables.

In addition to meal hampers, Christmas Amalgamated also provides clothing and toys to families.

Those wishing to support Christmas Amalgamated’s efforts can drop off donations at Unit 203 of the Cooper Centre, located at 780 Windsor Avenue.
