KAMLOOPS — Friday (Dec 13) marks A Way Home Kamloops’ annual Campout to End Youth Homelessness.

The organization had hoped to hold the campout at the brand new Katherine’s Place building along Tranquille, but with construction still needing one more week to be completed, the campout will move down the street to the A Way Home offices.

“We had hoped to have occupancy [Friday], but it’s a week away,” said Tangie Genshorek, Executive Director of A Way Home Kamloops. “We are actually going to shift. We are going to be doing most of the event just a few doors down at our office. And we will come down here for a quick tour, we will be allowed to go in and safely do a tour of the building — but unfortunately we did that shift yesterday just knowing we weren’t going to quite get there for tonight.”

To date, this year’s campout has secured more than $40,000 in pledges for campers.

Katherine’s Place, named in honour of A Way Home Kamloops’ former executive director, will provide homes for 39 youth while also surrounding the clients with all the needed support services.

“There are a lot of really key aspects to the building that are new and programming we are providing that hasn’t happened with BC Housing before,” said Genshorek. “We are trying to wrap around a new level of supports for the youth who we serve and really meet them where they are at with some key pieces around life skills that will help them move onto independent living.”
