COLLINS: Donald has it wrong — again

Dec 8, 2024 | 6:00 AM

I HAVE BEEN RACKING MY BRAIN the past couple of weeks, trying to make sense of Donald Trump’s tariff plans.

Donald is trying to intimidate Mexico and Canada by threatening heavy tariffs. Ostensibly, Trump wants its two neighbours to put more effort into fighting the border war as well as making a number of other commitments. Trump says Canada and Mexico are letting all the drugs and the cartel bosses through a border that is just too big for border guards to patrol.

At one point, the U.S. and Canadian governments were proud to say our border was the longest undefended border in the world. That’s not the case anymore.

But here’s the rub. If Donald wants the bad guys out of the U.S., why does it not fall on his government to resolve the problem instead of Mexico and Canada? We’re well aware of the drug crisis, but if we take the kind of approach Dr. Doom is taking, it’s just not going to work.

And for Trump to threaten to impose these excessive tariffs on the top two U.S. trading partners seems delusional to me. If you add the potential tariffs Trump might impose against China, you’re now talking about the top three trading partners representing almost half of the total U.S. trade each year. The tariffs won’t come close to replacing that money. And they certainly won’t make America great again.

Sadly, Canada doesn’t have a lot of resources to push back. Unlike Mexico, which has more ability to reach out to other markets, Canada is a little more restricted.

Nevertheless, if Trump thinks the tariffs will help resolve the drug problem, he will quickly discover that all he’s done is make enemies of those countries he needs to be by his side. His isolationist theories will not work. I wonder how long it will take for him to get the message.

I’m Doug Collins and that’s One Man’s Opinion.
