Kamloops SPCA caring for eight stray cats, preparing to welcome 15 to 25 more from same property

KAMLOOPS — The BC SPCA is reminding residents of the ramifications of feeding stray cats as the Community Animal Centre in Kamloops prepared to welcome dozens of four-legged friends.

In a news release issued Tuesday (Dec. 3), the BC SPCA says the Kamloops centre is currently caring for four adult cats and four kittens. However, staff are preparing to welcome 15 to 25 more surrendered cats from the same property over the coming weeks.

“In this case, the finders began feeding stray cats in their community during the pandemic and in no time at all, the number of cats in their home more than doubled. They became overwhelmed and reached out to us,” Daria Evans, manager of the BC SPCA’s Kamloops animal centre says. “We are currently in the process of bringing all the cats into our care.”

According to the agency, two additional adult cats had to be euthanized. Evans says the kittens have tested positive for coccidia and one of the adults tested positive for giardia. Both are contagious, parasitic infections, so the cats were put into quarantine.

Once the cats are out of quarantine, Evans says staff will attempt to get them ready for adoption.

“The kittens are very playful and sweet,” Evans says. “They were a little grumpy when we gave them their coccidia baths, but that is to be expected. They now seem to be much happier and content. The adults appear to be a combination of indoor and outdoor cats.” says Evans. “They are very affectionate and love it when staff comes around to feed and care for them.”

The cats and kittens currently in care are expected to be available for adoption in one to two weeks.

Residents are asked to contact their local SPCA if there are stray cats in their neighbourhood as Evans says a cat population can quickly grow.
