December 25, 1936 – November 20, 2024
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mary Elizabeth Dobrovolny on November 20, 2024, at Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in New Westminster, Mary grew up on the family farm in Queensborough. She met Tomas at a dance at the Slovak Hall in Queensborough in 1956, and they were married in 1958. Raised on the farm, Mary learned the values of hard work, community, and the challenges of being the daughter of immigrant parents.
Her early years on the farm shaped the strong, independent, and kind woman she became. Mary spent much of her life in the Lower Mainland before relocating to Kamloops, where she enjoyed raising her boys on Dufferin Terrace. The children in the neighborhood affectionately called her “Mrs. D.” Mary loved to cook for her family and often treated them to traditional Czech and Slovak dishes. In the 1960s, Mary helped Tomas build their special cabin at Lac Le Jeune, where their three children enjoyed the freedom to explore and play.
Mary treasured the close-knit bonds she shared with her family and friends. Her warmth, nurturing spirit, and constant thirst for knowledge brought comfort and fostered wonderful conversations with all who knew her.
A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, Mary was predeceased by her beloved husband, Tomas. She is survived by her loving family: sons Tom, Jim (Sharon), and Dan (Marianna); cherished grandchildren Jimmy, Katie, Sarah (Graham), Jackson (Cecilia), Grace, Matthew (Nicolena), Jon (Brooke), and Nicholas; as well as six great-grandchildren: Marek, Luka, Riah, Miller, Daisy, and Archie. She will also be missed by her extended family in the Czech Republic and many dear friends.
In accordance with Mary’s wishes, there will be no formal service.
You may offer a message of condolence at Schoening Funeral Service for the Dobrovolny family.
