KAMLOOPS — Another big win for the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack women’s volleyball team as they beat the Trinity Western Spartans 3-1 Saturday night (Nov. 23) at the Tournament Capital Centre (TCC) in Kamloops.

The WolfPack took the opening set 25-15 though the Spartans bounced back with a 25-22 win in the second. TRU then took the third set 25-19, and secured the win – and the weekend sweep – in the fourth set 27-25.

Rida Erlalelitepe led the way for the WolfPack with a game-high 17 kills and 11 digs, while Brooklyn Olfert had 10 kills and eight digs. UBCO’s Tayana Dmitruk had 19 digs, while Maryn Boldon had 13 kills for the visitors.

“We played well enough, when we were disciplined and played within our system we controlled the match.” Head Coach Chad Grimm said. “We had some lapses but it was good that even though we dug ourselves some holes we were able to pull ourselves out of the grave and get the job done.”

The fifth-ranked WolfPack improve to 6-2, and remain a perfect 4-0 on home court. The Spartans drop to 5-5 on the season.

In men’s volleyball action, the WolfPack were dominant early on, but they were unable to put away the Spartans in a 3-1 (15-25, 27-25, 25-19, 25-14) loss Saturday.

Dylan Annala led the way with 12 kills, while Mason Sodaro added nine kills along with a pair of blocks and an ace. His brother, Walker Sodaro, racked up 37 assists for TRU, who are now 2-6 on the season.

“That’s our best start in a long time,” Head Coach Pat Hennelly said. “We were close tonight and a couple breaks in the second and third and we are playing volleyball in the fifth.”

“I was happy with the effort, it’s hard after the last couple matches to pick ourselves up but we know the end of the semester is coming and we have to keep pushing.”

The ‘Pack head on the road to take on the University of Saskatchewan Huskies in a double header on Nov. 29 and 30. It’ll be their final games before the Canada West Holiday break.

Buzzer beater sinks WolfPack men’s basketball squad

It was a heartbreaker of a Saturday for the TRU men’s basketball team, as a half court heave from TWU’s Josh Belvin beat the buzzer and found nothing but net to give the Spartans a 70-67 win in Langley.

Cyrus Harrison led the ‘Pack with 17 points, while Dami Farinloye tallied 13 points and grabbed seven rebound. Both Denys Bachurin and Evan Smith scored 11 for the WolfPack, who fifth in the Pacific Division with a 3-5 record.

The Spartans proved to be too much for the winless WolfPack women’s basketball team as they took Saturday’s game 62-32.

The WolfPack basketball teams will host the Saskatchewan Huskies at the TCC on Nov. 29 and 30 to close out the first half of the Canada West season.
