Merritt ER to be closed for 25 hours this weekend

MERRITT — The emergency room at the Nicola Valley Hospital in Merritt will be closed for 25-hours this weekend because of a lack of staff.

Interior Health says the ER will be closed until 8:00 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 17, though it did not specify whether the closure is due to a lack of doctors or nurses.

The closure, which began at 7:00 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, is the 17th ER closure in Merritt this year.

As has been the case in the past, people in Merritt in need of emergency care are being told to head to Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops.

The closure comes as group of B.C. mayors – including Michael Goetz in Merritt – are joining forces to push for better healthcare coverage in rural communities across the Interior.
