Semi trucks being rerouted around downtown Kamloops during six-month pilot project

KAMLOOPS — Semi trucks will not be making their way downtown Kamloops for the next six months.

During a recent closed meeting, Kamloops council approved a six-month pilot project that will remove truck route designations on Lansdowne and Seymour Streets from Nov. 15, 2024, to May 15, 2025.

In a news release issued Friday (Nov. 1), the City of Kamloops states the six-month pilot will allow staff to learn the impacts of the possible removal of truck route designations in the downtown core and assess the large trucks and dangerous good routes through the city.

“Trucks are permitted to travel along non-truck routes as long as they use the closest and most direct route to the trip’s destination upon entering or leaving the truck route. However, there are some places in Kamloops where vehicles over 10,900 kilograms are prohibited,” the city states.

According to traffic counts held in February 2024, the City says Lansdowne Street sees nearly 340 trucks per weekday (190 single-unit and 150 articulated) while Seymour Street sees 150 per weekday (120 single-vehicle and 30 articulated).

Public transit and school buses are exempt from restricted truck routes with limited access to vehicles over a licensed gross vehicle weight of 10,900 kilograms.
