KAMLOOPS – Harry Fairbrother used to read the newspaper every day.

For Fairbrother and many other avid newspaper readers, the loss of Kamloops This Week – the city’s last print news outlet – was hard to handle.

“I was lost, just there was a whole big hole in my life,” Fairbrother told CFJC News.

Deanna DeCicco, owner of Manhandler Barber Shop, says the loss of the local paper was especially felt in barber shops.

“It’s something to read while they’re sitting and waiting,” said DeCicco. “I definitely find that the 60-and-over demographic is missing it very much. It gives us something to talk about during the haircut.”

After a year without a local paper, a new monthly paper called the Kamloops Chronicle has made its debut.

“Since it’s been out, like my phone’s ringing off the hook. People are just really excited to have a newspaper back,” said Arjun Singh, executive director of the Kamloops Chronicle Society. “We’ve got somewhere around 200 monthly donors. We’re trying to get up to 1,000 and then 4,000. [We’re] starting off really, really, really strong and that’s very, very exciting.”

Kamloops resident Dustin McIntyre says he’s been anticipating the first issue of the chronicle.

““I’ve been following, from a distance, the work that they’ve been doing behind the scenes. And it’s really exciting to see the first copy come out,” said McIntyre. “I think they’ve done an incredible job and I think it’s really important to the community.”

The next issue is slated for the end of November, but if all goes as planned, Singh sees the Chronicle printing more frequently.

“We’re sort of more on this sort of like, recap, human interest — kind of more sort of review kind of stuff,” said Singh. “The goal is to go back to the weekly edition over time. But right now we’re just obviously putting together all the plans to hopefully make that happen.”
