Police roadblock near Malakwa results in massive cocaine seizure

MALAKWA, B.C. — An RCMP traffic stop near Sicamous has led to the seizure of a whopping 73 kilograms of cocaine.

In a news release issued Monday (Oct. 28), B.C. Highway Patrol (BCHP) says a roadblock was set up on October 8 along the Trans Canada Highway near Malakwa. It was operated by the division’s Traffic Safety Unit along with Sicamous RCMP.

A 28-year-old man from Surrey was pulled over as part of the roadblock and that’s when officers uncovered the massive cocaine shipment.

The driver was arrested, then released on conditions with a court date. The man’s vehicle was seized as part of the investigation.

“This operation highlights the BC Highway Patrol’s Traffic Safety Unit’s ongoing efforts to make both our roadways and communities safer by removing dangerous drugs from circulation and preventing them from reaching our communities in BC,” said Inspector Lori Orstad of BCHP Special Traffic Operations. “The preliminary investigation would suggest that this has all the earmarks of organized crime. This is a very large amount of drugs so certainly expect to see an impact on the illegal drug trafficking operations within the province.”
