MERRITT, B.C. — Prolonged rain and gusty winds are expected for the Coquihalla Highway from Hope to Merritt this weekend.

Starting Friday (Oct. 18) and lasting through Sunday morning, Environment Canada says rainfall totals are expected to reach 30 to 60 millimetres. In a special weather statement online, the weather agency says it’s due to a strong autumn storm system that will direct an atmospheric river towards the South Coast.

Hazards include water pooling on roads, swollen rivers and creeks, increased risk of washouts, rockfall, and landslides and power outages.

Further east, a rainfall warning is in place for the Trans Canada Highway from Eagle Pass to Rogers Pass from Friday afternoon to Sunday evening.
