Preliminary SD73 enrolment nearly identical to last year: report

KAMLOOPS — Early numbers from School District 73 show almost exactly as many students enrolled this year as at the beginning of last school year.

A report to be presented to the Board of Education at its next meeting on Monday (Oct. 7) shows enrolment of 15,580 students as of September 30. That total is down by just three from the same point in 2023-24.

District staff say kindergarten enrolment is down by about 60, but elementary and secondary numbers are up by nearly the same total.

Before the school year began, staff had predicted a year-over-year decrease of about 64 students.

At its Sept. 9 meeting, the board approved funding for six new elementary divisions, or classes, throughout the district to account for “increasing pressures on class size and composition.”

Staff say three of those six classes will be funded through regular operating funds, while the remaining classes will be funded through the provincial Classroom Enhancement Fund.
